Avengers Review
May. 27th, 2012 03:53 pmFull disclaimer: I went and saw this movie for Joss Whedon. I've never read a comic book except for the Archie comics (and Maus I and II are graphic novels, not comic books), and the only prequel I've seen is Iron Man when it was playing in the background during lunch break during high school. I also didn't see/read any of the previews/interviews, and therefore, I went in with a completely blank slate, with no idea what to expect.
I also love that Joss Whedon thanks the fans who were with him before the Avengers.
I liked (maybe loved?) this movie. It has almost all the trademark Joss Whedon-y things: good dialogue, the creation of your own family/team/support group, and strong female characters (I loved Black Widow/Natasha). The only thing missing was the killing of a beloved character (like Wash in Serenity), unless killing Coulson was supposed to accomplish that, and I didn't know because of my lack of previous knowledge.
I went and saw this with my boyfriend because he missed the end credit scenes the first time. I had been forewarned by my Twitter peeps, some of whom had seen it two and three times already, to stay ALL the way to the end to catch the two bonus scenes. We wound up going to the later, 3D show because the show we were going to see, in regular definition, sold out as we were standing in line.
The audience was good; no one talked through the movie unless it was for making comments when everyone else in the audience was laughing or commenting, although we missed some lines cuz there was laughter over them. It's a good reason to go see it again, right? ;)
I liked how they introduced all the characters individually, except for Nick Fury and Hawkeye right at the beginning. I didn't feel like we really got to know Hawkeye's story before he left, but the individual introductions made it a lot less confusing than if everyone thrown together right away and you were left to sort out who was who on the fly.
My favourite characters were Black Widow and the Hulk. I loved Bruce Banner both as himself and as the Hulk, who is adorable in an "I'm going to smash everything to bits" kind of way. I loved that Natasha was the one who figured out what to do to solve the problem, and took action, so they just weren't plugging holes.
I think Black Widow/Hawkeye friendship and Hulk/Black Widow friendship are my ships, although I don't want to write either for fear of screwing up the characters. I shall be content with finding and reading the fic. :)
All in all, I thought it was very well done, and wouldn't mind seeing it again, although not in 3D.

Date: 2012-05-30 04:22 am (UTC)Black Widow: 33:35.
The most surprising thing to emerge from our little experiment was the fact that Scarlett Johansson’s three-point landing super-assassin got the third-most screen time of all the superheroes. In fact, she got the most unbroken dialogue scenes of any of the six: her introductory interrogation scene (3:14); recruiting Banner in the slums (2:49); a face-off on the Helicarrier with Loki (3:30); and a conversation with Hawkeye following their fight (2:40). Looks like Whedon realized he needed to give one of the film’s two strong female characters lots of talk time.
So I guess in that respect she was well represented. As I recall, in Iron Man 2 Black Widow was Iron Man's baby-sitter/side kick. It's been a while since I saw it, but I think she was pretty much dropped in without too much introduction beyond: "Hey look! It's a pretty SHIELD agent who can break your neck with her thighs."
I'm probably being unfair to her by measuring her against Zoe.

Date: 2012-06-08 03:22 am (UTC)Yes, EXCEPT Marvel told him to. I think Joss envisioned it more like first season Buffy where everyone except background people escape intact and then Marvel was like...actually...and Joss was like...You know everyone's going to blame me, right?
Still, he put in a LOT of fail safes for them to change their mind in the future...because the thing everyone forgets is that as much as he kills people, he usually brings half, if not most, of them back, usually in an even more awesome plotline...Spike as a ghost, Buffy torn from Heaven, Fred's body possessed by a demon...
I've been told by others that Joss had to be purposely blank with Hawkeye's past in case they wanted an origin movie later...which needs to happen because of how excited everyone is for Bourne Legacy...they also have to keep the circus stuff and have Barney or I'll be pissed. I get that he's remade himself into a soldier the way Natasha is doing but still...there are some things you should not mess with.
I thought I couldn't do 3D because the stuff at Disney always made me nauseuos if I left the glasses on too long but the digital 3D isn't as bad. I took the glasses off a few times here and there, especially the final battle, but it looked really nice otherwise. I finally got why some people liked the 3D movies so much. I've seen it 3 times in 3D and once in 2D.
Now, that I know I can do 3D, I wish they would have the marathon again in theatres...maybe for the 50th anniversary next year...
Oh, since you don't know the awesomest of Coulson...have you seen A Funny thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer?

Date: 2012-06-08 05:42 am (UTC)Ooo, origin movies would be good, for him as well as for Natasha. Seriously, why do female superheroes not get origin movies? This should be rectified, preferably by Joss. I still need to watch (and rewatch Iron Man) all the origin movies, too. And I agree: some parts of canon are sacred and should not be messed with.
Just discovered that there was talks with Scarlett Johansson, back in 2010, for the possibility of a Black Widow movie. Yes, please! There needs to be more strong female characters in leading roles out there.
I don't usually watch movies in 3D, although I apparently have been watching some recently, as I found a pair of 3D glasses in my purse. I am jealous of the amount of times you've seen it. I think I'm going a second time with one of my friends this coming week.
Ooo, no I haven't. Must go to YouTube!
